ANDY WARHOL

UNIQUE BODY

ANDY WARHOL / Unique Body

Warhol’s coveted uneditioned prints (Uniques) position themselves somewhere between his canvases, collages, and drawings on the one side, and his numerous celebrated printed editions on the other. Not originally intended for public eyes, these works offer a rare glimpse into the artist’s practice and psyche. These vivid experiments in color, composition, and subject hint at the inner workings of one of the most radically experimental artists in history; they’re less worked over, less fussed with, and offer a raw and electric experience of Warhol.

This fresh view is arguably more difficult to tease out of his editions and other media aesthetically groomed for the public. Through fine tuned editing and a keen awareness of how the viewers of his time would respond to his own creative choices (skills developed in his early career in commercial art and advertising), Warhol strangely distanced himself from the works he is perhaps most well known for. The Unique, conversely, is a highly personal document of the unguarded aesthetic instincts that are the bedrock of Warhol’s practice.

The dynamic of the Unique is most evident in Warhol’s works on the human figure. Here, it is not difficult to project Warhol’s now notorious issues with self-image, body, sexuality, and celebrity onto the compositions. Endlessly fascinated by the way in which human geometry relates to iconic celebrity and his own awkward position relative to that universe, Warhol and his obsessions come through strongly in these works in a palpable and at times even conflicted way — a rare valued glimpse into the private mind of a very public artist.

ANDY WARHOL / Unique Body / Vanishing Animals

One of the character traits that continue to enthrall Warhol curators, historians, and collectors is the artist’s softer, compassionate side — a foil to his better known interests in capitalism and celebrity. Warhol’s altruism extends from the open nature of his studio (known as The Factory, in which outcasts of society were welcomed, employed, and even housed) to his unique religious piety as a practicing Catholic, and in his work surrounding vulnerable animals.

Akin to his Endangered Species prints commissioned by environmentalists and gallerists Ronald and Frayda Feldman, the Vanishing Animal series differ in one notable respect: the nature of collage negates edition ability making each work an unduplicated rarity prized by novice and seasoned collectors alike. In this limited series species such as the Sommering Gazelle, Giant Chaco Peccary, and La Plata River Dolphin is screenprinted over vibrant hues of collaged paper in compositions as unique as the creatures themselves.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Obsessed with celebrity, consumer culture, and mechanical (re)production, Pop artist Andy Warhol created some of the most iconic images of the 20th century. Warhol was the most successful and highly paid commercial illustrator in New York even before he began to make art destined for galleries. Nevertheless, his screen-printed images of Marilyn Monroe, soup cans, and sensational newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous with Pop art. He emerged from the poverty and obscurity of an Eastern European immigrant family in Pittsburgh, to become a charismatic magnet for bohemian New York, and to ultimately find a place in the circles of High Society. For many his ascent echoes one of Pop art’s ambitions, to bring popular styles and subjects into the exclusive salons of high art. His elevation to the status of a famous icon represented a new kind of fame and celebrity for a fine artist.
