GERMAN, 1944

Candida Höfer is a Cologne, Germany-based photographer and a former student of Bernd and Hilla Becher. Like other Becher students – Axel Hütte, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth – Höfer’s work is known for technical perfection and a strictly conceptual approach. Her photographs investigate the forms and structures of spaces, as well as their details. She examines the contradictions between intention and actual use, as well as the layers of historical change. This approach leads her to very personal portraits of spaces. The images invite us to take time to discover and reflect upon what spaces do to us and what we do to spaces.
