ANDY WARHOL
Jacqueline Kennedy (Jackie) Portfolio
On November 22nd, 1963 John F. Kennedy was Assassinated in Dallas Texas. Andy Warhol wasn’t affected by the loss as so many were at the time. Always fascinated with the way PEOPLE at large responded to the celebrity he was transfixed by the media attention surrounding Kennedy’s death.
Warhol was a student of humanity and avid collector of details that surrounded his fascinations. He and his assistant at the time Gerard Malanga began scouring newspapers and magazines for images related to the assassination.
Warhol was immediately drawn to Jackie Kennedy. With hundreds of photo’s as source material Warhol eventually settled on eight. They covered the timeline from right before the assassination to the funeral, and the story the untouched photographs tell is as powerful as Warhol’s “artwork.”
Warhol is famous for saying to “see my work is to know me.” Few argue that this portfolio tells a story and perhaps let you see through Warhol’s eyes in a way that is rare even for Warhol.
