AMERICAN, b. 1977

Rashid Johnson is a contemporary American artist known for his powerful explorations of identity, race, and history through a diverse range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation. Emerging as a key figure in post-Black art, Johnson’s work often incorporates materials rich with cultural and historical significance—such as shea butter, black soap, mirrors, and wood—creating deeply personal yet universally resonant narratives. His visually dynamic compositions draw inspiration from art history, literature, and African American intellectual traditions, making his work both conceptually profound and visually compelling. With exhibitions at major institutions like the Guggenheim, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and the Whitney Museum, Johnson continues to be one of the most influential voices in contemporary art today.
