FERNANDO “SKI” ROMERO

HELLO

FERNANDO “SKI” ROMERO / HELLO

Imagined geography is a new kind of shared place, a bedrock of common experience among the new nomads, and In the new exhibition “Hello :)” the soul of LA becomes a twenty block neighborhood seen in the streets of NYC and SKI is the cartographer of that invisible multi-city.

SKI infuses his canvas with a potent mixture of nostalgia and celebratory wistfulness, evoking the sentiments of a seasoned traveler. Through his works, he seeks to bring out the often hidden creative exchanges that drive our modern cultural engines. Drawing on his graffiti artist background, SKI produces evocative depictions of the two cities. He seamlessly blends the cultural threads of the two, fusing them together to create an entirely unique and compelling art experience. Using graffiti tags, reminiscent of those that once adorned the corrugated walls of Urban America, now adorn grand landmarks and symbols of both New York and Los Angeles. His works skillfully interweave the psychic through-lines between these two cities, and how art serves to unify cultures.

SKI exudes a playful and masterful approach to his craft. His pieces are filled with a sense of humor and child-like vivacity that are most palpable in his brilliant use of color and bustling positioning of his name’s letters. From standalone works to his urban mashups, his calligrams range in complexity from a simple brick-born “throwies” to intricate time-intensive murals. The interplay of text and image harmonizes to create compositions that are both compelling and inspiring.
